Hello and welcome to the Bass Corner. This week I thought it may be nice to stretch out a bit more and explore the next level in the warm up series. This warm up is very closely related to Jaco Pastorius’s spider warm up which is featured in his instructional video.

What I love about this level is that it uses all 4 fingers in the left hand . Emphasis is placed on dexterity, strength and eye/hand coordination. Below are a few tips to help you best approach this exercise.

1. Follow your 1st finger. The rest of your fingers are sheep, they will follow.

2. Lead your fingers into each other. For example, when you finish playing the 1st fret with your 1st finger, do not pick up your 1st finger until you are just about to start the note your 2nd finger will be playing.

3. Keep your fingers close to the neck. The closer your fingers are to the neck, the quicker you will get to your note. This also helps to keep your hand in a comfortable playing position.

In the recording, I first play this exercise in quarter, 8th and then 16th note rhythms. Play along with whichever is comfortable for you.

Let’s get started!

Always play using fingers 1 2 3 4 in the left hand. Match them up so that you are placing one finger per fret.

Now let’s work our way back down the neck.

I hope you enjoy this new warm up. Everything we learn brings us closer to having freedom over our fretboard. This freedom allows us to express what is in our minds and hearts as players.

Enjoy your BASS!
